Dear Parents, Let Them Make a Mess
A little reminder that childhood doesn't need to be perfectly planned.
There is a quiet pressure that comes with being a parent today.
The right school.
The right activities.
The right food.
The right toys.
The right clothes.
The right amount of screen time.
There is always another thing to research, another milestone to keep up with, another way to become a “better” parent.
And somewhere between trying to give our children everything, we can forget to give them something very simple:
room.
Room to be bored.
Room to make a mess.
Room to change their mind.
Room to spend an entire afternoon doing something that seems completely pointless to an adult.
NOT EVERY MOMENT NEEDS TO BECOME A LEARNING MOMENT
A child doesn’t need every activity to teach them a skill.
Sometimes drawing is just drawing.
Sometimes playing dress-up is just playing dress-up.
Sometimes a cardboard box really is better than the expensive toy that came inside it.
Children naturally find ways to explore the world. Parents don’t have to turn every experience into a lesson.
Sometimes our job is simply to let the moment happen.
LET THEM HAVE THEIR STRANGE LITTLE PHASES
The child who wants to wear the same colour every day.
The one who suddenly loves dinosaurs and wants everything to be a dinosaur.
The one who carries a random spoon everywhere.
The one who asks “why?” seventeen times before breakfast.
These little phases don’t need to make sense.
They are part of a child figuring out what they like, what interests them and what makes them happy.
We don’t have to understand every little obsession.
We can simply make space for it.
MESS IS NOT ALWAYS SOMETHING TO FIX
There will be paint on the table.
Food on the clothes.
Crayons where crayons were never supposed to be.
A room that looks like a small storm passed through it.
And yes, sometimes it needs cleaning.
But perhaps not immediately.
Because a childhood spent worrying about keeping everything perfectly clean leaves very little room for getting involved in the world.
Let them make the mess.
The floor can be cleaned.
THE BEST THING YOU CAN GIVE THEM MAY NOT BE ANOTHER THING
Children don’t necessarily need more stimulation, more activities or more things to keep them occupied.
Sometimes they need an afternoon with nothing planned.
A walk without a destination.
A game they invent themselves.
A day when nobody is rushing them to the next thing.
Because childhood isn’t a checklist of experiences to complete.
It is the time in which a person slowly becomes themselves.
And perhaps that is the kind of childhood we should be designing for—not a perfect one, but one with enough freedom to be wonderfully imperfect.
At Cute Lemons, we love the little worlds children create when nobody tells them exactly what they are supposed to do.
Because sometimes, the most beautiful part of childhood is the part we didn’t plan. 🍋
